Green spaces in cities, such as parks, waterfront spaces and forests, can improve moods and provide significant benefits in mental health. From an international perspective, this study retrieves 766 English papers in the field of urban green spaces and mental health in 2010-2020 from the Web of Science, which are published in SCI/SSCI journals, and analyzes 50 most highly cited studies in detail, and summarizes the relevant theoretical framework, main research objects, measurement tools and specific indicators of green space and mental health variables, as well as the critical steps in research conducting. Existing studies target on urban green spaces such as parks, streets, forests, countryside and green spaces in residential areas, and focus on their green coverage, green looking ratio, landscape components and environmental perceived dimension. Emotional state, attention and stress are used to indicate mental health status. Specifically, emotional state scale, recovery state scale, psychological testing tasks and brain wave are used to measure mental health status. Existing research shows that urban green space can help restore attention, mitigate stress, alleviate loneliness and depression, as well as reduce undesirable behaviors. Based on the above analysis, this study provides implications for related research and planning practice in China.
