How to provide supporting blue space for residents in built-up areas is a new topic for maintaining the physical and mental health of residents. Based on the core database of Web of Science, the paper reviews 45 English papers pertaining to the empirical research, which have been published in recent 10 years. From the perspective of mediating role of environmental exposure behavior, the paper discusses the health effect of blue space, analyzes the influencing factors, and evaluates the current research methods. The results show that the environmental exposure behavior can be conceptualized into three types, and the internal environment and the surrounding connections of blue space jointly determine the health effects of environmental exposure, which is also regulated by individual differences. The mediating role of environmental exposure behavior is measured using the methods of potential exposure behavior measurement and explicit exposure behavior investigation. In view of limitations and deficiencies in data acquisition and analysis, it is suggested that future research should be improved in terms of data collection, research methods and practical applications, so as to provide a reference for health-oriented blue space planning.
