摘要
The study aims at synthesizing a novel, flexible bio-based coating material with enhanced mechanical properties. The isomers of abietic acid, typically sourced from pines were epoxidized using glycidol via carbodiimide chemistry. A mono and di-epoxy based abietic acid were successfully synthesized and as characterized by IR, Mass, and NMR spectroscopy. The content of the epoxy-based abietic acid was varied before mixing with epoxidized soyabean oil. The resultant admix was cured to a transparent biomaterial. It exhibits superior characteristics that can be fine-tuned by altering the proportion of epoxidized abietic acid relative to the triglyceride. It was found that the biomaterial prepared by slight addition of abietic acid dimer (0.75%) performed better than mono abietic acid (1%) in terms of thermal and mechanical properties.
