Vegetable oil is a general term for non-drying oil such as olive oil and castor oil, semi-drying oil such as cotton oil and soybean oil and drying oil such as Tung oil and linseed oil. It is quite a potential environmentally friendly wood modifier due to its good hydrophobicity and thermal conductivity. So far, wood modification with vegetable oil has achieved certain positive results. In this paper, the basic composition, type of vegetable oil and different approaches of vegetable oil treatment on wood are introduced. The penetration and distribution of modifiers, hydrophobicity, hygroscopicity, dimensional stability, biodegradation resistance, mechanical properties and aging resistance of vegetable oil treated wood are reviewed. Finally, the existing shortcomings and research prospects of vegetable oil modification are discussed, expected to inspire the researchers for future research work.
