Forest therapy represents a sound approach to prevent and cure diseases in a forest environment with good health care functions and medical certification, which carried out in a form of forest therapy courses under the guidance of doctors or therapists. It has been nearly 200 years since the concept was emerged. As people are increasingly aware of their psycho-physiological health, forest therapy has developed vigorously all over the world with the support of research-based medical evidence. In this study, the development history and evolution process of forest therapy are reviewed. Its development history is divided into four stages: incubation & practice phase (before the 1930s), exploration & development phase (1930s-1980s),research & promotion phase (1990s-2010s) and integration & innovation phase (the 2010s). And the development of forest therapy is characterized as: 1) research-based medical evidence; 2) a strong ecological awareness; 3) rooted in the traditional culture of local region; 4) a trend of diversified development. At the end, the future research hotspots of forest therapy are discussed from the four aspects of theoretical innovation, mode innovation, perspective broadening, and policy guidance.
