Africa has the world's third largest stock of bamboo resource, only next to Asia and Latin America. In Ethiopia, Kenya and other countries of Eastern Africa, where there is a limited diversity of bamboo species, highland bamboo and lowland bamboo are the most common. In Madagascar of Southern Africa, Cameroon of Central Africa, Nigeria of Western Africa and other African countries that boast a richer bamboo resources, species are more diversified. Ethiopia, Nigeria, Cameroon, Madagascar, Congo, Mozambique, Senegal and Ghana rank top in terms of bamboo forest area. Lacking in modern processing technology, the bamboo industry in Africa mainly utilizes the plant for traditional products, with the imports and exports on a very limited scale. Recent years have seen more active efforts and positive progress on the development of bamboo industrial strategies and policies and on related international cooperation in main bamboo-growing countries in Africa. This paper analyzes the bamboo resources in 21 African countries and their utilization, in order to provide references for the development and utilization of bamboo resources in Africa.
